Smoke detectors save lives — but only if they're there, powered, and working. The nine-volt detector with a dead battery is the classic failure, and it's why current standards call for hardwired, interconnected detectors: when one sounds, they all sound.
We install and upgrade smoke and carbon monoxide detection across Fort Lauderdale homes: hardwired with battery backup, interconnected so the whole house hears it, placed to code in bedrooms, hallways, and living areas.
Why Hardwired and Interconnected
Battery-only detectors get their batteries removed after the third false alarm — and never replaced. Hardwired detectors with battery backup stay powered through outages and can't be casually disabled.
Interconnection is the other half: a fire starting in the garage at 2 AM needs to wake the bedrooms upstairs. When one hardwired detector sounds, they all sound. That's the standard, and it's worth meeting.
Carbon Monoxide Too
Any home with gas appliances, an attached garage, or a fireplace needs CO detection alongside smoke detection. CO is odorless and colorless — the detector is the only warning you get. We install combination units where they make sense, placed to code.
Placement and Code
Detectors belong in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the home — including the basement if you have one. Kitchens and bathrooms need careful placement to avoid nuisance alarms without leaving gaps in coverage.
We evaluate your current coverage, fill the gaps, replace expired units — detectors age out after about ten years — and wire it all to code with a permit where required.
Common questions
How often should detectors be replaced?
About every ten years — the sensors degrade. Check the manufacture date on the back; if it's over a decade old, it's time.
My detectors go off when I cook. Can that be fixed?
Usually with better placement — moving the hallway detector a few feet from the kitchen door, or using a photoelectric unit less prone to cooking nuisance alarms. We sort it without leaving you unprotected.
Do I need CO detectors if everything is electric?
If you have an attached garage, yes — CO from a running car is the risk. All-gas homes need them regardless.
