Breakers are the guardians of your wiring: they trip to stop overloads and faults before the wire overheats. When a breaker keeps tripping, it's doing its job — the question is what it's protecting you from.
We diagnose tripping breakers properly instead of just swapping parts. Sometimes the breaker is worn and needs replacement. Sometimes the circuit is overloaded. Sometimes the AC's startup surge is the real culprit. We find out which before we quote.
Why Breakers Trip
Overload is the most common cause: too much draw on one circuit. Kitchens, bathrooms, and garages trip most often, usually when a space heater or hair dryer joins the party. The fix is redistributing loads or adding a circuit — not a bigger breaker.
Short circuits and ground faults trip instantly and violently. Those need professional diagnosis, full stop. And breakers themselves wear out: heat and age make them trip below their rating, which looks exactly like an overload until it's tested.
The AC Connection
A breaker that trips only when the air conditioner starts is one of our most common calls. The causes split across both trades: a weak AC capacitor making the compressor pull excess startup current, or an undersized, worn, or wrong-type breaker on the AC circuit.
Because we do both, one visit tests the AC's electrical draw and the breaker's condition together. See our breaker-tripping guide for the safe homeowner steps.
Never Upsize a Breaker Yourself
The breaker size protects the wire, not the appliance. Putting a bigger breaker on the same wire lets the wire overheat before anything trips — that's how electrical fires start. If a circuit needs more capacity, the answer is a new dedicated circuit or a panel upgrade, sized and installed by an electrician.
Common questions
Can I reset a tripping breaker more than once?
Once, to rule out a fluke. If it trips again, leave it off and call us — repeated resets overheat the wiring.
How long do breakers last?
Decades in good conditions, fewer in hot panels or under constant heavy load. A breaker that trips below its rating has worn out and needs replacement.
Should I replace all my breakers at once?
Rarely necessary. We test and replace what's actually failing. If the whole panel is aging out, a panel upgrade is usually the better investment than piecemeal breaker swaps.
